2010 Abari Orthodontics/Oral Surgery in Review!

We are proud to announce that we successfully complimented our orthodontics practice with adding oral surgery full services and treatment, our new company name is: Abari Orthodontics/Oral Surgery.

Our two double-degree Oral Surgeons are: Dr. Benjamin W. Walline DDS, MD, and Dr. Robert Hou DDS, MD.

Also, lately...

• We had 3 very successful Study Clubs for our referring dentists in San Dimas, Diamond Bar and surrounding communities. These were well attended with over 150 doctors and team members. Not only do we provide dinner and CE credits for their renewal of licenses, this also enhances their knowledge of dentistry and improves their care they provide to their patients.

• Our entire team attended the Anaheim CDA meeting, where we all learned so much and had a fun team luncheon.

Lastly, here’s a wonderful review we recently received from our patient, Fatima Ellis. Fatima writes,

"Being and RDA gave me the opportunity to hear & check Dr. Abari's work from a closer clinical approach. Since 2005 while working at Plaza Dental Group in Rowland Hgts with kids and young adults, I noticed that all patients with orthodontic work were missing all four first premolars EXCEPT Dr. Abari's patients. I like this less aggressive treatment and more conservative approach in order to save all patients teeth. I also get great feedback from his patients and their parents. Now that finally it was my turn to be Dr. Abari's patient, I can tell why Dr. Abari's team is always the first option for all dental offices around the area. Great service, and communication skills are superb, front office, back office staff and both Dr. Abari and Dr. Will are working in full harmony and take care of patients with a holistic approach, always offering the best care for their patients. I am happy with my results and the constant communication between my dentist, Dr. Bae and Dr. Nazari and Dr. Abari in order to fit my oral needs from the aesthetic and functional aspects of dentistry. Great Teamwork! I have to thank everybody at Dr. Abari's for my NEW SMILE!”

Have a safe and happy New Year, to all our patients, friends, family and all our dental and medical colleagues in San Dimas, Diamond Bar and surrounding communities!

Thanks to you, Dr. Abari, my smile is bigger and brighter!

I can’t even explain how excited I am. From the first time I came here I knew it was going to be a beautiful outcome. You and your staff are amazing and I think my teeth look great. This is so wonderful and when I have kids I will bring them to you.

Coming here in your office was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life. You’ve made something that I thought was impossible, possible. I highly recommend anyone that needs braces to go to this office.

Talking retainers with Abari Orthodontics

If you recently completed treatment at Abari Orthodontics, we’d like to congratulate you! Again! Now that your braces have been removed, Dr. Robin Abari will provide—or has provided you—with retainers.

After braces are removed, teeth can shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Retainers provide that stabilization. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed by Dr. Abari is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime. Here are some things to remember when you receive your retainers:

* Wear your retainers full time, until the doctor instructs otherwise. Wearing your retainers at night ensures that your pearly whites won’t relapse.

* Take your retainers out when eating...and always put retainers in their case! (Most appliances are lost in school lunch rooms or restaurants.)

* Clean retainers thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and only a small amount of toothpaste. Use warm but not hot water.

* When retainers are not in your mouth they should ALWAYS be in a retainer case.

* Retainers are breakable, so treat them with care. If retainers are lost or broken, give us a call immediately.

* Remove retainers when swimming or during any sporting activity in which the retainers could fall out and get broken or lost (cheerleading, basketball, etc.) or when you should be wearing a mouth guard (football, soccer, etc.).

We hope this helps! You can always contact our team at our offices in San Dimas or Diamond Bar if you have any questions! Happy Monday!

Halloween safety tips from Abari Orthodontics

happy halloween Pictures, Images and Photos

Trick-or-treat! In the spirit of this weekend's sweet and spooky holiday, Drs. Abari and Will and our staff at Abari Orthodontics would like to remind all of our patients in both San Dimas and Diamond Bar to be safe while celebrating with friends and family. The American Association of Orthodontists were kind enough to provide trick-or-treaters with some tips for a ghoulishly good time.

A few Halloween safety guidelines:
• Young children should always be accompanied by an adult
• Carry a flashlight
• Wear a light-colored or reflective costume
• Choose face paint over masks for young ghosts and goblins
• Have an adult inspect all treats before the children dig in

Many treats can cause havoc for trick-or-treaters who are going through orthodontic treatment. If you happen to damage your braces, please give us a call immediately. Typically, small problems can be solved over the phone.

We wish you all a safe, fun and happy Halloween weekend!

Halloween Do's and Dont's, from Abari Orthodontics

All those sweet, sour and sticky candies may taste great this Halloween season, but these treats can damage your teeth and braces too! Did you know sour candies can be acidic to your teeth, and actually wear down the enamel that protects them? This can cause tooth decay and cavities! After eating these candies, be sure to wash your mouth out with water, drink milk or eat a few slices of cheese. These will help neutralize the acid in your mouth (wait at least one hour before brushing your teeth with toothpaste, as this can actually increase the effects of acid on your teeth)

Besides cavities and tooth decay, many people do not realize that good oral health and hygiene are important to your overall health too! Research is discovering the connection between periodontal disease and other major health concerns, such as heart disease! Therefore, it is important to maintain a good oral hygiene routine: see your dentist every six months, brush and floss daily and use an antibacterial mouthwash.

Instead of all that unhealthy candy, try any of these delicious and braces-friendly Halloween recipes, courtesy of the American Association of Orthodontists! Happy Monday!

October is National Orthodontic Health Month! From Abari Orthodontics

With October being National Orthodontic Health Month at Abari Orthodontics, we thought we'd remind our patients to be careful when they bite into their treats this Halloween season.

Remember, caramels, taffy, nuts, bubble gum, popcorn kernels and suckers are some of the foods you should be avoiding this Halloween Season! Indulging in these foods can break your braces and lengthen your treatment time at Abari Orthodontics!

Of course, Halloween doesn’t have to be completely treat-less. Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists have provided a helpful list of tips and braces-friendly recipes for you to enjoy. Check them out, and we hope you're having a relaxing weekend!

If you have any follow-up questions, please feel free to give us a call, ask us on Facebook or ask Drs. Abari or Will during your next visit at our San Dimas or Diamond Bar office!

Ask Abari Orthodontics: Why are straight teeth so important?

Some people wonder why our team at Abari Orthodontics work tirelessly to give our patients straight teeth. Of course it’s nice to have a smile full of evenly aligned teeth, but did you know that straightening your teeth at our convenient offices in San Dimas and Diamond Bar can keep them healthier? Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime! At Abari Orthodontics, we commit to providing excellence in our orthodontic treatment and to our goal of a balanced face, healthy jaw joints and beautiful smiles.

Straight teeth are less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque—the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and they are easier to keep clean!

If you’re wondering whether your teeth might cause problems because they are out of alignment, please give us a call to set up a consultation. Dr. Robin Abari or Dr. Lawrence Will can help you decide whether or not you will benefit from orthodontic treatment.

Abari Orthodontics, helping you save face this fall

With the fall season only a week away, our staff at Abari Orthodontics would like to take this time to remind our young athletes wearing braces to take care of both your mouth and appliances while participating in contact sports (and non-contact sports) this month. After all, we know this is a busy time of year sports-wise, whether kids are playing soccer in the park or preparing for high school football.

Remember, only by using a mouth guard can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries. So, the next time you're in for a visit at any of our San Dimas or Diamond Bar office, we encourage you to ask us for a mouth guard, and we will provide one! Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Ask Abari Orthodontics: When should my child come in for a consultation?

Great question.

The fact is, many parents in San Dimas, Diamond Bar and surrounding communities assume they must wait until their child has all of his or her permanent teeth to visit Abari Orthodontics, only to find that treatment would have been easier if started earlier. But, did you know our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven?

Ok, you think to yourself, what’s so great about age seven? Well, at that point, enough permanent teeth have arrived for us to make a determination about whether any problems are present. The first molars have come in, providing an opportunity to check for malocclusion, or what Dr. Robin Abari and Dr. Lawrence Will call “bad bite.” Also, the incisors have begun to come in, and problems such as crowding, deep bites and open bites can be detected.

Early evaluation, of course, may signal a need for early treatment. For some children, early treatment can prevent physical and emotional trauma. Aside from spurring on years of harmful teasing, misaligned teeth are also prone to injury and detrimental to good oral hygiene. So if your child is nearing age 7, please give us a call at 909-396-9000 to schedule a free initial consultation!

We hope you have a great week!

Back to school with Abari Orthodontics

Now that many of the schools are back in session in San Dimas, Diamond Bar and surrounding communities, our staff at Abari Orthodontics would like to remind all of our patients about the importance of scheduling appointments in advance. With school, clubs, sports and family/social functions to consider, we know that it can be challenging to find time to visit our office this fall. In order to accommodate all of our patients' busy schedules, it is important that you plan ahead for your appointments so that we are able to provide you with an appointment time that is convenient for you.

As always, please remember to give us advanced notice if you're unable to make your regularly-scheduled appointment. If we receive enough notice, we might be able to schedule another patient for that time. Feel free to give us a call at 909-895-4914 if you have any questions, or if you would like to schedule your fall appointment.

Have a great rest of the weekend! Drs. Abari and Will, as well as the rest of our staff, look forward to seeing you!

Abari Orthodontics Reminds You of Your Pal, Fluoride

There are so many ways you protect your teeth throughout your orthodontic treatment. You brush your teeth twice a day, floss regularly and protect your mouth and appliances from being damaged. But did you know there is another, often forgotten about, way to keep your teeth clean and healthy during your treatment? Fluoride – a mineral that helps prevent cavities and tooth decay – can help keep your teeth strong! Fluoride comes in two varieties: topical and systemic. Topical fluoride is applied directly to the tooth. Topical fluoride includes toothpastes and mouth rinses. Systemic fluorides are swallowed in the form of a dietary supplement.

Fluoride used in the dentist/orthodontists’ office is often times a stronger concentration than in toothpaste or mouthwash, but is available at some drug stores or a pharmacy (ask your doctor how to purchase professional strength fluoride). A fluoride treatment typically takes just a few minutes. After the treatment patients may be asked not to rinse, eat or drink for at least 30 minutes in order to allow the teeth to absorb the fluoride. Depending on your oral health or doctor’s recommendation, you may be required to have a fluoride treatment every three, six or 12 months. Your doctor may also prescribe a fluoride product such as mouthwashes, gels or antibacterial rinses for at-home treatment.

When choosing your own fluoride product, be sure to check for the American Dental Association’s (ADA) seal of acceptance. Products marked with the ADA seal of approval have been carefully examined and have met the criteria of the ADA for safety and effectiveness. Take care of your teeth, and smile bright!

What’s on your summer reading list?

With summer in full swing, some of us at Abari Orthodontics wanted to remind all our patients about the importance of reading. Sure it’s easy to keep putting off reading during the summer, but reading during the summer is a vital step in brain development and warding off the dreaded “summer slide”—and it's fun!

What's on YOUR summer reading list? What are some of your all-time favorites? Out of ideas for great summer reads? Ask us for suggestions, and our staff (and Drs. Abari & Will) would be happy to provide a few suggestions. You may also ask a local librarian for some ideas or check out these summer reading ideas that we came across today, courtesy of Barnes & Noble.

Happy reading! Be sure to share with us your summer picks or your all-time favorites on our Facebook page!

Ask Abari Orthodontics: Is Invisalign® really customized for each patient?

Yes, it is, and that’s part of what makes it work, says Drs. Abari & Will. To find out if you are the right candidate for Invisalign treatment, the first thing we do is to take an impression of your teeth as they are now and digitize it. Using special software, we look at the current positioning of your teeth and compare it to the way your teeth should look.

Next we use special software to map out the exact path your teeth will take from the beginning of your treatment to the end. Based on the results, a set of custom aligners are created just for your teeth. Throughout the course of treatment, you will be required to wear these clear, removable aligners one at a time; each one moving your teeth closer and closer to their final, perfectly aligned position. The best thing about it all? Nobody around you will even know you are wearing braces!

Abari Orthodontics is a certified Invisalign provider. If you have questions about Invisalign, or would like to find out if you are a candidate for Invisalign treatment, please give us a call.

Happy Independence Day, from Abari Orthodontics

This upcoming Sunday - which happens to be Independence Day, of course - our staff will celebrate our nation's 234th birthday. For most folks, the Fourth of July is a chance to celebrate and commemorate America's Declaration of Independence. It's also a time for every American to pay homage to all our soldiers, past, present and future - who lost their lives in battle - and the brave servicemen- and women who place themselves in harm's way every day so that we may continue enjoy our freedoms.

Today, we thought we'd ask: what are your Fourth of July weekend plans? Are you heading to a barbecue? A picnic? Hitting the open road with family? Having fun in the sun?

Whatever you might be doing over Independence Day weekend, our entire staff hope you have a great week and a safe and happy Fourth of July weekend! Feel free to post your Independence Day photos on our Facebook page!

Meet Our Orthodontists

Dr. Robin Abari has been practicing orthodontics exclusively for adults, teens, and children since 1981. After graduating from New York University with honors, he taught in New York University's Medical Center Cleft Lip Department. He was on staff at White Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles.

A well known orthodontist in Southern California, Dr. Abari has transformed over 20,000 smiles and has treated over 1,000 surgical cases with severe malformed occlusion. His dedication and love for his field has made him an expert in orthodontics. He is a frequent lecturer to dental societies throughout the country.

The focus of his work on young children is European-style functional growth issues. He receives referrals from all of Southern California because of this. He treats many adults and teens with special problems, including surgical implants and periodontitis. Dr. Abari has innovated and designed orthodontic appliances to provide patients with more comfort and optimum results. Dr. Abari was selected for 2003-2004 as one of America's "Top Orthodontists" by Consumers' Research Council of America, a recognition given to only a select few orthodontists.

On a personal level, Dr. Abari enjoys spending time with his family and exercising, as well as reading orthodontic journals in his spare time!

Dr. Lawrence Will received his dental degree from Loma Linda University. He served as Assistant Director of Continuing Education for Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, until beginning his Post Graduate studies, graduating with a MS in Orthodontics. Following completion of this orthodontic specialty training, Dr. Will also served as Clinic Director for the Graduate Orthodontic Clinic at Loma Linda University and taught the orthodontic portions of dental hygiene and undergraduate dental students. Before joining Dr. Abari, Dr. Will maintained a private practice in Northridge, California.

Dr. Will's focus is on the orthodontic needs of each and every patient and is excited to be a part of the vibrant, cutting-edge orthodontic practice of Dr. Abari.
