September is Self-Improvement Month!

These days, Americans everywhere are putting greater emphasis on health, fitness and self-improvement, and more people are seeking orthodontic treatment to improve their smile. September happens to be Self-Improvement Month, and our team at Abari Orthodontics/Oral Surgery know that orthodontic treatment is an investment in self-improvement that will reap benefits for a lifetime. And, recent advances in orthodontia, such as Invisalign and more effective brackets and wires, now make orthodontic treatment more palatable for many interested in obtaining that beautiful smile.

Not only does orthodontic treatment give you that beautiful smile, it can also benefit your dental and general health. If teeth are poorly aligned, removing plaque and tartar by brushing and flossing alone may be difficult. A poor bite may result in fractured or excessively worn tooth surfaces, and the extra stress caused by a poor bite may even result in problems with your jaw joints.

If you’ve been thinking about getting that perfect smile, Dr. Abari and team would love to have you visit for a complimentary consultation. Please give us a call to set one up at our San Dimas or Diamond Bar office!

Back to school with Dr. Abari and team

Now that many of the schools are back in session in San Dimas, Diamond Bar and surrounding communities, our staff at Abari Orthodontics would like to remind all of our patients about the importance of scheduling appointments in advance. With school, clubs, sports and family/social functions to consider, we know that it can be challenging to find time to visit our office this fall. In order to accommodate all of our patients' busy schedules, it is important that you plan ahead for your appointments so that we are able to provide you with an appointment time that is convenient for you.

As always, please remember to give us advanced notice if you're unable to make your regularly-scheduled appointment. If we receive enough notice, we might be able to schedule another patient for that time. Feel free to give us a call at 909-895-4914 if you have any questions, or if you would like to schedule your fall appointment.

Have a great rest of the week! Drs. Abari and Will, as well as the rest of our staff, look forward to seeing you!

No one is ever “too old” for orthodontic treatment!

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: At Abari Orthodontics/Oral Surgery, NOBODY is “too old” for braces!

In fact, our staff read a fascinating statistic recently: the number of adults getting braces has actually climbed 24 percent since 1996! Yes, braces help make your pearly whites strong, healthy and perfectly-aligned, but perhaps another reason for the spike in adult braces is this: people want to look and feel great. In an age—and society—where looks matter as much as anything, and at a time when evenly-aligned and sparkling teeth might be the difference between getting a job or a promotion, adults are choosing—wisely, we might add—to invest in orthodontics. Orthodontic treatment with Drs. Abari and Will can be successful at any age, and adults especially appreciate the benefits of a beautiful smile.

Contact one of our orthodontic offices in San Dimas or Diamond Bar for your free initial evaluation. Your beautiful smile is waiting!

We hope everyone is having a great summer!

Are you visiting the dentist during your orthodontic treatment?

We hope you’re having a great week! If you’re brushing and flossing daily during your orthodontic treatment at Abari Orthodontics/Oral Surgery, we think that’s great! But, don’t forget that it’s also important for you to visit your general dentist every 3-to-6 months in addition to your home care (and visiting our office, of course). Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health, especially during orthodontic treatment.

Your general dentist can check for problems that might not be seen or felt, detect cavities and early signs of decay, treat oral health problems early and show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth.

During an oral exam your dentist can check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not been to the dentist in the last six months, let us know during your next visit and we will provide a few great references in San Dimas, Diamond Bar or surrounding areas!

Seven, the magic number

The fact is, many parents in San Dimas, Diamond Bar and surrounding communities assume they must wait until their child has all of his or her permanent teeth to visit Abari Orthodontics/Oral Surgery, only to find that treatment would have been easier if started earlier. But, did you know our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven?

Ok, you think to yourself, what’s so great about age seven? Well, at that point, enough permanent teeth have arrived for us to make a determination about whether any problems are present. The first molars have come in, providing an opportunity to check for malocclusion, or what Dr. Robin Abari and Dr. Lawrence Will call “bad bite.” Also, the incisors have begun to come in, and problems such as crowding, deep bites and open bites can be detected.

Early evaluation, of course, may signal a need for early treatment. For some children, early treatment can prevent physical and emotional trauma. Aside from spurring on years of harmful teasing, misaligned teeth are also prone to injury and detrimental to good oral hygiene. So if your child is nearing age 7, please give us a call to schedule a free initial consultation!

We hope you're having a great week!

Smile! June is National Smile Month!

At Abari Orthodontics/Oral Surgery, we can hardly believe it's already June! June is National Smile Month, and a good time to remind all our patients to practice good oral hygiene between your visits to our San Dimas and Diamond Bar offices, as well as your general dentist.

Below are a few simple steps you can take to improve your oral health so that you may celebrate National Smile Month for many, many years to come:

* Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
* Floss everyday to clean between your teeth and braces.
* Reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks during your orthodontic treatment
* Visit your dentist regularly (every 6 months or as recommended by your dentist)!

If you have questions about any of these tips, we encourage you to give us a call, ask Drs. Abari or Will during your next visit ...or ask us on Facebook!

Have a great Memorial Day weekend!

The unofficial kickoff to summer—Memorial Day weekend—is a time Americans stop and remember those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom over the course of American history.

Memorial Day also marks the unofficial start of the summer, and for many of our patients, getting out of town for three days after being cooped up in the office or in the classroom is sweet relief. At Abari Orthodontics/Oral Surgery, we also know Memorial Day weekend is ripe for travel. After all, it’s a season of vacations, adventures and great memories.

What about you? What are you and your family up to this Memorial Day weekend? Whether you are headed to a barbecue, a camping trip, or hitting the open roads of California with family this weekend, we want to know all about it!

Dr. Abari and our entire team wish you a nice and relaxing (and safe) Memorial Day weekend!

What's the deal with cavities?

At Abari Orthodontics/Oral Surgery, we know one word nobody wants to hear when they visit their dentist is Cavity! Yes, the dreaded cavity - especially while you're undergoing orthodontic treatment! But what exactly is a cavity and how do you get one? A cavity is a hole that dehttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifvelops in a tooth when the tooth begins to decay. It’s important to get a cavity filled as soon as it’s detected so that it does not grow bigger.

So, what causes a cavity? Well, a cavity is caused by plaque, a sticky substance that forms on the tooth as a result of germ and bacteria build-up. Plaque is acidic and as it clings to your teeth the acids eat away the outside of the tooth (also called the enamel) and a hole is formed.

Yes, cavities can be repaired by your general dentist, but here are a few simple steps you can take to prevent cavities while you’re wearing braces:

· Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste at least twice daily

· Gently brush your gums to keep them healthy (when choosing a toothbrush it is recommended to use soft bristles)http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif

· Floss your teeth at least once a day to remove plaque and food that may be caught between the teeth and braces where your toothbrush can’t reach

· Limit the amount of soda and sugary treats you eat or drink

· Be sure to visit your dentist every six months for a teeth cleaning and check-up during your orthodontic treatment with Drs. Abari and Will

We hope that helps! Give us a call to learn more about keeping your braces and oral health in tip-top shape or ask us on Facebook!

April is National Facial Protection Month! From Abari Orthodontics/Oral Surgery

With spring here, many of our patients at Abari Orthodontics/Oral Surgery will once again pick up the ball, bring the bat out of seasonal retirement, and lace up their cleats to hit the fields for the return of spring sports! April is National Facial Protection Month, and during this time, Drs. Abari & Will both urge our young athletes to play it safe when out on the field. According to the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation, children, high-school athletes and adults will have more than 5,000,000 teeth knocked out in sporting events this year.

Here are a few ways to ensure your mouth’s safety this spring, courtesy of our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists:

1. Wear mouth guards for contact sports such as baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse.
2. Wear a helmet
3. Wear protective eyewear
4. Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
5. Be alert, even as a spectator

We hope that helps. Protective gear is vital for anyone engaging in tooth or mouth-threatening activities. If you have any further questions about any of these tips, please contact our San Dimas or Diamond Bar, CA offices). Stay safe and have fun!

At Abari Orthodontics/Oral Surgery, we are dedicated to using the most advanced orthodontic technology in order to provide comfortable, accurate, customized orthodontic treatments for you and your family. Drs. Robin Abari & Lawrence Will & our talented staff have been creating beautiful smiles in southern California for years.

The bottom line is, we know having a beautiful smile is important to you. It’s important to us, too.

And speaking of smiling, in a new poll conducted by Glamour Magazine, people were asked, “If you had to pick between having perfect teeth, eyesight or hair, which would you choose?

Well, 44 percent of folks out there are choosing teeth! In addition, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, or AACD, conducted a study and found that 99.7 percent of those polled believed a smile is an important social asset. Respondents said straightness, whiteness, cleanliness, as well as the sincerity and sparkle of a person’s smile were all important factors not only socially, but career-wise as well.

Get to know your braces! From Abari Orthodontics/Oral Surgery

We hope you're having a great weekend! Should you need to call Abari Orthodontics/Oral Surgery in case you sustain any damage to your braces, we can help you more effectively if you can tell us exactly which piece is in trouble! Here’s a handy diagram and corresponding list of all the parts that make up your braces.

Elastic Tie: Tiny rubber band that fits around the bracket to hold the archwire in place.

Archwire: The main wire that acts as a track to guide the teeth along. It's changed periodically throughout treatment, as teeth move to their new positions.

Loop in Archwire: Frequently used for closing space left by an extraction. Many archwires don't have a loop.

Bracket: Small attachment that holds the archwire in place. Most often, a bracket is cemented directly onto the tooth's surface, eliminating the need for a band.

Headgear Tube: Round, hollow attachment on the back bands. The inner bow of the headgear fits into it.

Coil Spring: Fits between brackets and over archwire to open space between teeth.

Tie Wire: Fine wire that is twisted around the bracket to hold the archwire in place.

Band: A thin ring of metal fitted around a tooth and cemented in place. The band provides a way to attach the brackets to the tooth.

Hook: Welded or removable arm to which elastics (rubber bands) are attached.

Elastic (Rubber Band): Small rubber band that is hooked between different points on the appliance to provide pressure to move the teeth.

Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any questions during your next visit or on Facebook!

Ask Abari Orthodontics: When should my daughter come in for a consultation?

Thanks for the question! Many parents in San Dimas, Diamond Bar and surrounding
communities assume they must wait until their child has all of his or her permanent teeth to visit Abari Orthodontics, only to find that treatment would have been easier if started earlier. But, did you know our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven?

So, what's the advantage of early orthodontic treatment?

If we at Abari Orthodontics/Oral Surgery are able to see a patient at an early age, we can expand the arches because the facial bones are still growing, which will create a wide, U-shaped arches and allow us to treat the patient without extractions. In the majority of cases if the patient is referred at the optimum timing (age nine to ten), then there is a high probability of a non-extraction treatment plan.

If primary teeth are lost or removed prematurely, then the appropriate space maintaining appliance must be used to retain the arch length, thus providing us with enough arch length to allow complete and proper eruption of all permanent teeth.

Early evaluation, of course, also may signal a need for early treatment. For some children, early treatment can prevent physical and emotional trauma. Aside from spurring on years of harmful teasing, misaligned teeth are also prone to injury and detrimental to good oral hygiene. So if your child is nearing age 7, please give us a call at 909-396-9000 to schedule a free initial consultation!

We hope you have a great holiday weekend!

February marks Children's Dental Health Month

At Abari Orthodontics/Oral Surgery, February marks National Children's Dental Health Month - each February for the past 61 years, the American Dental Association (ADA) has sponsored National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

For kids wearing braces, brushing and flossing can become more difficult, requiring extra time and vigilance to remove food particles that accumulate on and between the teeth and in braces. If the health of your teeth is ignored during treatment with braces, the results can be significantly compromised. Drs. Abari & Will are available and happy to explain why effective brushing and flossing is one of the most critical actions needed from patients during orthodontic treatment. Have you visited our San Dimas or Diamond Bar office? Give us a call and schedule a new-patient exam!

Monday, January 31, 2011

Are you wearing your mouth guard?

Spring sports are just around the corner, and our staff, including Drs. Abari and Will, would like to remind our young athletes in treatment to take care of both your mouth and appliances while participating in contact sports (and non-contact sports) as well this spring. Our team at Abari Orthodontics/Oral Surgery will tell you that only by using a mouth guard can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries. And don't forget to ask us for a mouth guard - we will provide a mouth guard for anyone in active treatment!

If you have further questions or are ready to schedule your consultation, just give us a call at our San Dimas or Diamond Bar office.

Monday, January 24, 2011

Ask Dr. Abari: Who needs orthodontic treatment, anyway?

While orthodontic treatment can improve smiles at any age, there is usually a best age to begin treatment at Abari Orthodontics/Oral Surgery in order to achieve maximum improvement with the minimum amount of time and expense. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child’s first visit to an orthodontist take place by age seven or earlier if a problem is detected. Early interceptive, or phase-one treatment can guide facial growth, prevent crowding of permanent teeth, correct crossbites, overbites and underbites, control harmful oral habits and even reduce the length of comprehensive treatment.

As for adults, more and more of them are deciding - wisely - to straighten their teeth. In fact, the number of adults getting braces has actually climbed 24 percent in the last 15 years! In an age—and society—where looks matter as much as anything, and at a time when evenly-aligned and sparkling teeth might be the difference between getting a job or a promotion, we see more and more adults are undergoing orthodontic treatment.

Teenagers as well as adults also benefit from the skill of Dr. Abari and Dr. Will's orthodontic treatment. You won't be able to stop smiling! Contact one of our orthodontic offices in San Dimas or Diamond Bar for your free initial evaluation.

More than just a day off from school

Today, our country celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who was a thinker, leader and civil rights champion. In the 1950s and ’60s, Dr. King recognized the need to bring about social justice, and worked tirelessly to instill tolerance in our nation, strengthen America’s communities and move the nation forward. This weekend, tens of thousands of people of all ages and races in southern California and across the United States spent their time building, giving and renovating our communities to help celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend. Did you have the day off? If so, did you participate in any service- or community-building projects?

We’d love to know about your activities and events this MLK Jr. Day. If you have any video or pictures you’d like to share, please pass them along! If you’re not sure how, give us a call!

Drs. Abari and Will and our entire team at Abari Orthodontics/Oral Surgery are proud of all our patients, families and colleagues who continue to make a difference in our community!

Gummy Tummy?

At Abari Orthodontics/Oral Surgery, we know the rumors going around that once you swallow a piece of chewing gum it will take up residency in your stomach for at least seven years! We really hate to take all the fun out of the mystery, but the truth is that chewing gum, when swallowed, will enter the stomach and move through the digestive system just like any other piece of food and leave the body long before seven years! So, if you ever have accidentally swallowed a piece of gum, there is no need to worry!

This being said, gum does not have any dietary benefits, so while it’s not harmful to swallow, you still want to avoid swallowing it. If you are a gum-chewer, make sure you chew sugarless gum, because gum with sugar can lead to cavities. Sugarless gum still has the same amount of flavor, but with less cavity causing ingredients. You see, when the bacterium in your mouth breaks down sugar, what’s left behind is acid. This acid eats away at the enamel coating of your teeth, causing holes that we call cavities. Cavities can lead to other long term mouth problems if they are not treated in time, so it is best to try and avoid overexposing your teeth to too many harmful substances!

Give us a call at our convenient San Dimas or Diamond Bar office if you have any questions!

Happy (sugar-free) gum chewing from our entire staff!

What is your New Year's Resolution?

Let’s face it, when was the last time you managed to keep a New Year’s resolution? Our staff at Abari Orthodontics/Oral Surgery believe the key to sticking to a goal is picking one that is both reasonable and attainable. If you haven’t yet picked a New Year’s resolution, consider setting one that will improve your oral health during your orthodontic treatment!

For example, resolve to brush twice and floss once a day. Good oral hygiene only takes a few minutes a day, and can make a big difference in your oral health and overall health too after you’re done with braces! For more oral health-themed resolutions for you and your family, check out this article.

We would love to see what you come up with, share with us by commenting on this post or on our Facebook page. Whatever your New Year’s resolution, we wish you the very best for 2011!
